This is a great design for people who want to wear antique jewelry but are afraid that they might damge it. The gypsy setting is strong, secure and it doesn't snag on fabrics. It comfortable, can stack with other rings.....its a piece you will want to wear everyday.
This beauty dates to the end of the 19th century and features an approx. .55 ct old mine cut diamond. The table is small, the girdle not a completey round and there is a large open culet. All the great characterists of an older diamonds. The diamond is securely bezel set. The weight is estimated as its hard to tell who much of the diamond is under the bezel. I've had to remove a few diamonds out of gypsy settings and I am always shocked how much bigger the diamond really was once removed.
By loupe the diamond is clean, and in the near colorless, slightly yellow range. Hard to tell when they are set especially in a bezel in yellow gold. Overall it is in very good antique condition. No chips, no scratches, by microscope tinnie tiny nibbles on a few facet junctions. Jeweler did go over the piece and verified as 18k (there is a stamp 18k in shank with star motif). He also lightly polished the band but kept that antique feeling.
